Engagement Session

As your wedding photographer, my mission is to create a visual narrative that allows you to relive every emotion and detail of your special day. The getting-ready phase plays a pivotal role in this narrative.

While it may seem less glamorous compared to other segments of your wedding, this stage is brimming with authentic moments and heartfelt connections, perfect for capturing.

Maximizing the Impact of Your Bride Getting-Ready Photos
Just like every other aspect of your wedding, a little planning beforehand can elevate your experience and ensure stunning photographic results.

understanding the significance of getting-ready photos

Attention grooms! As you prepare for your big day, here are some tips to ensure everything runs smoothly. First and foremost, make sure you and your groomsmen know how to fold your tie neatly. While I'd love to assist, mastering this skill beforehand will prevent any delays. Ensure your suit is steamed and ready to go, and consider wearing your shoes in advance, especially if they're leather and may need some breaking in. Don't forget about cufflinks and pocket squares too! Knowing how to wear them and fold everything properly will add to your polished look. Taking care of these details ahead of time will help your day flow seamlessly, allowing you to focus on enjoying every moment.

For grooms considering morning activities like golf, remember that sun exposure can affect your appearance in wedding photos. Plan accordingly to avoid sunburn, ensuring you look your best in your cherished memories.

Additionally, grooms should ensure all their details are ready, room is neat and tidy, shower beforehand, and gather with their groomsmen to relax, as these moments make for great photos.

PREPARATION IS KEY

Upon my arrival, instead of immediately pointing my camera at everyone, I prefer to start by capturing details like the dress, shoes, invitations, flowers, or any other elements you've chosen for your day. It's helpful to have these details prepared in advance so that a bridesmaid can easily direct me to them, allowing me to capture them joyfully until everyone feels more at ease.Afterward I focus on capturing the natural moments as they unfold. Regarding your dressing process, I understand that some people may feel shy, and I will only join when you're comfortable. Rest assured, as a fellow woman, I am mindful of your comfort and will never photograph any unflattering angles.

Ensure your bridesmaids are dressed and ready for photos when I arrive. This allows us to capture beautiful moments without delay and ensures everyone looks their best in the images.

Brides should aim to be dressed 30 minutes before departure, with hair and makeup completed 45 minutes prior, accounting for the time it takes to get into the dress. Encourage your bridesmaids or mom to get dressed before you so they can assist you. Remember that I need to be at the ceremony venue before you arrive to capture every moment seamlessly. Frequently, it's the extended duration of hair and makeup sessions that lead to scheduling setbacks. Arrange your hair and makeup appointments with sufficient buffer time, ensuring you're close to being ready by the time your photographer shows up. My suggestion? Allocate double the anticipated time for hair, makeup, and transit. This approach grants you the freedom to take pre-wedding portraits without feeling rushed.

Depending on where the groom is getting ready, I may be able to cover it on my own. This often works great if you’re getting ready at your venue. If there are separate locations at the venue for the bride and groom to get ready, it’s easy for me to jump back and forth while you’re getting into your dress, or while hair and makeup is finishing up.

If both of you are getting ready separately, I can plan to allocate time to visit both locations. Alternatively, if you prefer coverage of the groom's preparations and are not getting ready together, I can arrange for a second shooter to accommodate this. Opting for the 10-hour package ensures ample coverage for all aspects of your special day.

It makes more time for pictures without sacrificing cocktail hour

GROOMS

This part of the day holds a special place in my heart as it helps to narrate the entire story of your wedding. The time spent with family and friends is truly precious and passes by swiftly. Typically, I arrive at the bride's location two hours before the ceremony begins, preceded by photographing the venue's decor.

From a photographer's perspective, the ideal setting is one that is spacious, well-lit, and tidy, although I understand the challenges posed by smaller spaces. Ideally, the makeup artist will position you in a way that allows natural light from the window to fall on your face, which works wonders, especially in darker rooms.

EFFICIENT PLANNING

When planning your special moments, Take time into consideration, include it in your timeline, and inform me well ahead of time. Special moments such as the 'first look' with your dad or other significant individuals, take the time to consider who will be present and if you'll exchange gifts. Some brides prefer an intimate setting, while others enjoy sharing the moment with loved ones.

For a flawless and timely first look with your soon-to-be husband, it's essential to plan strategically. Notify me in advance if you're considering this special moment, allowing us to align it seamlessly with your wedding timeline.

When we can, we always try to take a photo of your rings while you're getting ready. If possible, try to have your engagement ring cleaned or clean it yourself.

To clean at home, soak your ring in warm water with dishwashing soap for 20 to 40 minutes. Then gently brush the stone with a soft toothbrush, rinse and repeat if needed.

Groom DETAILS CHECKLIST

Your choice of getting-ready location sets the tone for your wedding day. It's where the excitement builds, the final touches are made, and memories are captured. Whether it's a hotel, venue, or Airbnb, each option offers unique advantages and considerations. In this section, we explore how to find the ideal space that not only accommodates your needs but also enhances the beauty of your pre-wedding moments.

THE getting ready
location

neutral wall colors

Opt for rooms with neutral or light-colored walls like white, beige, cream, or light/pale shades. These colors reflect light evenly, enhancing the natural glow in your photos. Conversely, darker walls can absorb light, resulting in dull or unevenly lit images. Avoid wood paneling or vibrant hues, as they may cast unwanted tones onto your skin in photos.

Natural Light and Windows

The presence of natural light is crucial for stunning getting-ready photos. Look for rooms with large windows that allow plenty of sunlight to flood in, creating soft and flattering illumination. Ideally, the room should have multiple windows or one sizable window to ensure ample light coverage. Spaces lacking windows or with minimal natural light can appear dim and may impact the overall aesthetic of your photos.

SPACE IS KEY

Prioritize booking suites or larger rooms for your getting-ready preparations. These spaces offer more square footage, allowing ample room for you, your bridal party, makeup artists, and photographers to move around comfortably. With sufficient space, you can avoid feeling cramped or confined, ensuring a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere as you prepare for your special day. Don’t be afraid to book your prep space early! I can’t tell you how many brides we’ve worked with who left this until the last minute and then were disappointed with their remaining options. So if your venue doesn’t already have an awesome prep space, start looking!

Proximity to Groom's Suite

Consider the proximity of your getting-ready location to the groom's suite or preparation area. Opting for nearby accommodations facilitates logistical coordination between the two parties, making it easier for me to photograph moments like the first look and bridal party interactions seamlessly. Additionally, close proximity enables efficient communication and eliminates unnecessary travel time between the two locations.

travel time

Choose a location that is close to your ceremony venue to minimize travel time and reduce stress on the big day. Being nearby also allows for seamless transitions between getting ready, ceremony, and reception.

Matching Space with Wedding Theme

Think of it as setting the stage for your big day—every detail should be in harmony, like a beautiful melody!

If you can, have the bouquets and boutonnieres delivered to the same location (even if the guys won’t be there) at the same time your photographer arrives. This way your I can incorporate them into your detail and portrait photographs.

Here it is—the moment everyone has been waiting for! The music fills the air as guests take their seats, bridesmaids all lined up in anticipation. Someone signals the musicians, and the bride is about to make her grand entrance to the love of her life. If she's like most girls, she's dreamed about this moment for a long time!

Please ensure to confirm with the person officiating your ceremony whether it's permissible for me to move around during the event. I refrain from using flash unless it's necessary due to extremely low lighting conditions, and I always prioritize staying out of the way. It's essential for both of us to be aware of any restrictions beforehand to prevent any disappointment afterward.

BRIDE: WHEN YOU AND YOUR BRIDESMAIDS WALK DOWN THE AISLE; BE SURE TO NOT WALK TOO FAST, ALSO LEAVE A GAP  BETWEEN EACH OF YOU.

BRIDE + GROOM : STAND CLOSE TO EACH OTHER AND HOLD HANDS DURING THE CEREMONY, AND DON'T BE AFRAID TO LOOK AT EACH OTHER THESE ARE SPECIAL MOMENTS. PLEASE PUT ON THE RINGS AND KISS SLOWLY - SO THAT I GET THE SHOT. THIS WAY, YOU ALSO TAKE TIME TO ENJOY THIS BIG MOMENT!

When it is confetti time, also make sure you don't walk too fast. And SMILE; I know the idea of things being thrown at you is scary, but keep your head up and enjoy it! Bride; be careful to not hold your bouquet in front of your face.

After the ceremony, there are lots of happy hugs and kisses - enjoy it. But try not to linger too long, especially if your ceremony ended a bit later than expected.

If you've been to a wedding recently, you may have seen a sign from the happy couple asking for their guests to remain "unplugged" during the ceremony.

And while it might seem like a strange requests to ask guests to put down their phones, there's a pretty good reason for it! You made a big investment in photography and we're sure one of the last things you want on your wedding day is for our photos of your ceremony to be filled with obtrusive iPhones, iPads and relatives standing in the aisle with their own cameras. In order to help us do the best possible job capturing your wedding, we recommend asking guests to unplug during the ceremony.

Please note that this list is just a starting point and that we're happy to take any requested family portraits as long as time allows!

Family Formals Checklist

When I send out the pre-wedding questionnaire, I'll ask you for a list of specific groupings and special situations (such as divorces or handicapped family members, and more). But if you want to start brainstorming photos in the meantime, you'll find our typical list below.

The best time to do family photos is directly after the ceremony, or if time does not allow, just before the reception. The location is also weather-dependent at the ceremony location or venue. I like to work quickly, so please ask for a family member or the MC to assist (preferably someone not shy of speaking up) who isn't in the photos, so that your guests can continue to enjoy the day.

These photos don't have to be boring - they should include all your favorite people - so feel free to share hugs and big smiles. If you want a big group photo of all your guests, this is best right after the ceremony (if possible). I would need a vantage point or the guests will have to stand on stairs, so keep this in mind if you want such a big group photo.
For photos of your wedding party (bridesmaids & groomsmen), we can have lots of fun, so feel free to be creative with the location or including props. Light is also a key factor in these - direct sun overhead will result in everyone squinting. In such a case, we will need to move to a shaded area. If time allows,

I love to capture a few photos of you and your guests enjoying drinks and snacks. So feel free to work in 10 minutes before your couple photos for this (only if time allows). While I'd love to, it is not possible to guarantee a photo of each guest.

your entire family, dressed up and together

This is my absolute favorite time of the day! It’s a chance for you both to relax and savor the moment—you’re now husband and wife!

Typically, I need about an hour for these photos, but 40-45 minutes can also be sufficient. Many of my couples have expressed how much they enjoy this intimate time together. I like to find a secluded spot away from prying eyes, preferably just us (and the videographers).

The best time for this is about an hour before sunset. For summer weddings, we can even sneak away from the reception for 15 minutes to capture some 'golden hour' photos when the light is beautifully golden. Keep in mind, for venues situated between mountains, the sun sets earlier.

I use only natural light for your portraits, so I will identify the best spots for your photos. Early on the wedding day, I scout the location to find the perfect spots for these shots. If you plan to get married late in the afternoon, consider having a first look before the ceremony.

Bride: Please don't worry about your dress getting dirty; it can easily be cleaned after the wedding.
Groom: Posing for photos might not seem exciting now, but you'll be grateful you took the time for these memories.

Feel free to interact with each other—be playful, share a joke, or simply enjoy the moment. These genuine interactions make for great photos! (THIS MAKES FOR GREAT SPONTANEOUS PHOTOS).

PORTRAITS

MR & MRS

The reception is perfect for capturing candid photos of your guests looking relaxed and having fun. I focus on natural shots to capture the true essence of the celebration. If you want photos with your guests where everyone is looking at the camera, please call me over. I highly recommend hiring a photobooth company for the reception. It's a fun way to get photos of you and your guests, and many guests prefer this to posing for the camera.

When planning the speeches, consider the backdrop. Venues often have a recommended area, but avoid placing the speaker in front of something like a fire extinguisher to ensure a more attractive setting. I use flash during the reception if there's not enough ambient light to ensure the best quality photos.

No one wants to be photographed while eating, so when the food is served, I'll take a break and grab a bite to eat myself. Weddings are long and physically demanding, and I'll be carrying heavy equipment all day. For a full-day wedding, I kindly ask that you provide meals for me and my assistant (if I have one). Many venues offer service provider meals, so please check with yours. If our meals can be served at the same time as yours, I'll be ready to continue capturing your special moments for the rest of the evening without any delay.

This moment is truly special but often passes in the blink of an eye. Just relax, enjoy it, and forget about me. I'll set up extra lighting beforehand to give it that extra pop. After everyone else hits the dance floor, I'll continue capturing the action for about 30 minutes more. There's only so many dancing shots you'll want, after all.

Some couples choose to open the dance floor as they enter the reception, while others do so before or after dinner. It's entirely up to you. If you're not much of a dancer, consider a slow dance, then you can simply enjoy the special moment without feeling pressured.

To ensure I capture the best dancing shots, your DJ needs to play the right music. Be sure to communicate with them beforehand about what type of music will get your friends and family dancing.

ELIJAH & LACY
A SANTA BARBARA ENGAGEMENT

As highlighted in the ceremony section, it's crucial to communicate with the marriage officiant or pastor overseeing the ceremony about their photography policies. Some may enforce strict rules, possibly banning photography altogether during the ceremony. Unfortunately, I must adhere to their regulations, and while I'll do my best to capture your special moments, I cannot guarantee unrestricted access if photography is restricted.

Slow down and flash those pearly whites when it's confetti time! While the sudden burst of confetti can catch you off guard, maintaining a big smile and lowering your bouquet slightly ensures your joyous expressions are perfectly captured. Remember, nobody wants a frowning confetti photo, so let's fill yours with pure happiness and laughter. Just bask in the love and cherish the moment.

Ensure you allocate ample time for our portraits (couple photos) to avoid feeling rushed. It's crucial to set aside moments for us to capture your authentic connection and genuine emotions.

Typically, a two-hour window before getting ready is sufficient, assuming there are no first looks or special events planned. However, please consider travel time to the venue if you're not preparing at the same location.

To ensure we capture every moment, please keep speeches concise, allowing me to document all the special moments within your coverage timeframe.

Try to wrap up all the formalities early in the reception, allowing you to unwind and fully enjoy the evening.

About 4-6 weeks before your wedding, you'll receive a detailed questionnaire. This questionnaire provides invaluable insight into your personalities and vision for your big day, ensuring that I capture your love story authentically.

Keep your venue coordinator or wedding planner in the loop with all the relevant details, including timelines, group shot lists, and any fun surprises you've got up your sleeve, such as sparkler exits, flash mobs, or additional photoshoot locations. Make sure to inform me as well. The more I know, the better I can tailor my approach to your unique vision.

RAINY DAY STRATEGIES

Embrace the unique advantages rainy weather offers for photography - from the romantic soft lighting to the creative possibilities with puddles and raindrops. Be sure to scroll down or click the arrow to discover more expert tips!

EMBRACE THE UNEXPECTED

Clear see-through umbrellas for you, your groom, or whole bridal party can be fantastic. They not only protect from the rain but also add a elegant touch to your images, depending on the style you choose. They also offer great opportunities for more portraits, ! Here are a few links to the best options.

Trust me—be prepared.

1. Use Umbrellas as Props

Assign a few trusted members of your bridal team or close family to be in charge of preparing for a rainy day. For those family members who won't be directly involved in the bridal party or couple portraits but will still be nearby, they can help gather towels, an emergency kit with dry socks, backup shoes, extra shirt for groom, warm drinks, and makeup for touch-ups. Staying dry and warm will ensure you enjoy the photo session without any discomfort. Choose someone outside the bridal party, whom you and your groom feel comfortable around, to hold onto these items during the photo session. This will help keep the atmosphere relaxed, especially for grooms who might feel a bit uncomfortable in front of the camera. These items can be lifesavers if unexpected rain leads to dampness or discomfort during your photo session.

Prioritize your comfort

2. Have a Backup Plan

Towels -Another great tip is to bring a white towel to put underneath your wedding dress to help keep it from getting dirty. Also great to dry off with. Make sure it is a full-body size to fit the train of the dress

Hairspray – it goes without saying, but make sure you give your hair some extra protection before going outside

Dry Shampoo- Revive flat, damp hair with dry shampoo. A quick blow-dry, a spritz of volumizing spray, and a touch-up can work wonders for simple styles, providing a volume boost without the fuss.

Hairdryer - Even with an umbrella, a hairdryer can be a lifesaver for your dress and hair in extreme weather scenarios.

Shout Wipes – can help to get rid of any stain and I’m not even exaggerating

Baby Wipes -  can be handy on a rainy day for quickly cleaning mud or dirt off shoes, clothing, or even the wedding dress. They can also help refresh makeup or clean hands if needed.

3. Added Rain Day Essentials

Rain Boots –if you know it's going to rain, opt for stylish rain boots that complement your wedding theme or add a touch of personality. Choose colors like beige or tan that harmonize with your wedding palette. If cowboy boots fit your vibe, go for it! Just ensure your footwear choice adds a fashionable touch to your photos, avoiding any cheap or mismatched looks. If boots don't align with your style, ensure you have an extra pair of shoes handy for after the shoot. Anticipate that your shoes may not be in pristine condition afterward, especially if there's rain and uneven terrain.

Overcast conditions diffuse natural light, eliminating harsh shadows and creating a flattering, soft glow on the skin. This dreamy lighting is perfect for romantic photos. Puddles offer a unique opportunity to capture creative reflections of the couple, the wedding party, or the beautiful surroundings. These shots can be strikingly artistic and add a dramatic flair to your wedding photos. Discuss with your photographer or explore venues that offer indoor or covered locations. These spots provide protection from the rain while ensuring stunning visuals for your photoshoot.Keep in mind that while it's not always possible, it's wise to consider this factor before booking a wedding venue, especially in areas prone to unexpected rainfalls.

4. Embrace Soft Skies,
    Puddles and Hideaways

We’re big believers that images aren’t meant to solely exist in a digital space. One day, most likely, Instagram will be gone, your phone will be replaced and images that you can physically hold in your hand will be the best way to remember those precious moments we captured.

Think about this fact: twenty years ago, if we had delivered you digital images, they would have been on a floppy disk. With the fast updates to technology, you would have no way to access those images today. Even the online galleries we deliver will eventually fade away.

One of the best ways to make your wedding memories last is by ordering an album. These high quality professionally designed albums come in a variety of linen & leather colors. These aren’t the same albums your parents' wedding photos came in. They’re modern, lay perfectly flat and look incredible on a coffee table.
